The massing and position of a new contemporary building echoes that of a mill that previously sat on the site, whilst the restoration of a derelict cotton mill draws a clear distinction between the original buildings and the new interventions.
We were appointed to provide a wider masterplan for the regeneration of the Castle street area in the heart of Stalybridge.
Our approach to the restoration of the derelict former Grade II listed cotton mill was to draw a clear distinction between the original buildings and the new interventions. We achieved this by faithfully revealing and restoring the cast iron columns, stone lintels and brick arches, together with the various scars of time, to celebrate the history and use of these important local landmarks. New interventions were simple and clearly modern, avoiding any ambiguity with the original building fabric. The design concept for the new building was a response to the client’s desire to achieve maximum diversity, character and choice for prospective purchasers. This was achieved by creating a pattern of interlocking apartments, expressed on the facade of the building through colour and a system of concrete ‘fins’ that define the perimeter of each individual apartment. |
‘Of the 3 mills shortlisted this stole the show, mainly because as much attention is paid to the crucial common areas as the apartments. Great quality materials used, great sense of place and good sized living spaces. It is a supreme job that has not only rescued a landmark site but has also created some lovely places to live.’
